Township Roots
Welcome to Township Roots, where the power of community and education converges to foster a future full of promise. Nestled in the heart of Cape Town's vibrant townships, we are a beacon of hope for young minds striving to rise above the challenges of poverty and inequality.
What is Township Roots?
Township Roots is a registered nonprofit that works with primary and high school learners from township schools to
promote a positive sense of belonging and a quality school experience through the provision of vibrant after-school
activities and connection to appropriate academic support for children where necessary.
Township Roots aims to decrease the school dropout rate in impoverished communities and empower young people
to overcome poverty through education.
Our Story
Once upon a time in the townships of Nyanga, Cape Town, there existed a community struggling with poverty, limited resources, and a lack of opportunities. Amidst the challenges, a group of compassionate individuals came together with a shared vision to uplift their community and create a brighter future for its residents. This marked the humble beginnings of an NGO called "Township Roots" in 2012.
What sets us apart?
Township Roots is a collaboration between childhood friends and experienced community development
practitioners, Bulelani Futshane and Nosisa Mhlathi. Having grown up in townships themselves, they understand the
unique social dynamics of these environments; the needs and realities of the children who live in them and the
community buy-in processes needed to make programmes such as Township Roots a success.
